Fagersta airspace surveillance tower, Air monitoring station in Fagersta, Sweden.
The Fagersta airspace surveillance tower is an observation station built from yellow brick with an octagonal shape and a small spire, rising 26 meters high. A spiral staircase with small illuminating windows winds upward to an observation platform at the top.
The tower was built in 1944 to direct anti-aircraft fire protecting the Fagersta Bruk AB steel mill. This mill supplied weapons and ammunition to Swedish Armed Forces during World War II.
The structure shows influences from Eastern architecture, resembling both a minaret and a medieval tower in its form. Its yellow brick exterior and octagonal shape create a distinctive visual presence in the landscape.
The site is accessible via a simple path and offers open views from the top over the surroundings. However, climbing requires sure-footedness due to the narrow spiral staircase.
Of the roughly 1200 surveillance towers built in Sweden during World War II, this was the only one designed by an architect. Cyrillus Johansson created a structure that stood out distinctly from the others.
