Baltic Sea Science Center, Science center and marine museum at Skansen, Stockholm, Sweden
The Baltic Sea Science Center is a facility with several aquariums displaying marine creatures from the Baltic Sea and located within the Skansen grounds. Inside, there are different tanks, laboratory areas, and a walk-through tunnel where visitors can observe predatory fish.
The facility grew out of a partnership between the Baltic Sea 2020 foundation and the Skansen Museum that started in 2011. Construction took place in 2016 and the center opened in 2019.
The center takes its name from the sea it focuses on and shows how important this body of water is to the region. Visitors encounter daily programs that engage people with marine life and environmental care.
The place spreads across several levels with different areas for visitors of all ages. It is helpful to plan enough time for exploring the tanks and displays without rushing through.
The main tank holds an enormous volume of water and is filled with specific salt levels to support more than 40 species native to the Baltic Sea. This allows visitors to observe habitats that exist below the surface of the real sea.
