National Stadium, Multi-purpose stadium in Kallang, Singapore
The National Stadium is a multi-purpose venue in Kallang with a retractable dome roof made of steel and glass panels spanning the entire playing field. Seating rises in multiple tiers around the oval arena and holds up to 55,000 people within the Singapore Sports Hub complex.
Arup designed this venue as a replacement for the earlier structure from 1973 that was demolished. The new facility opened its gates in 2014 after several years of construction.
The stadium serves as home ground for the national football team and draws large crowds during matches. Every 9th of August, this venue transforms into the setting for the National Day Parade with military displays and fireworks.
The nearest MRT stations at Stadium and Kallang on the East-West line provide direct access to the complex. Visitors should allow extra time for security checks at the entrance during major events.
An air circulation system uses wind patterns and roof openings to regulate temperature inside the arena. This cooling technique reduces energy consumption and makes the venue one of the first of its kind in the tropics.
