Singapore Indoor Stadium, Multi-purpose indoor arena in Kallang, Singapore
Singapore Indoor Stadium is a covered multi-purpose hall in the eastern part of the city, hosting sports and concerts. Its cone-shaped roof rises above a pillarless playing area that holds about twelve thousand spectators.
Japanese architect Kenzo Tange designed the hall in the late eighties with a budget of ninety million Singapore dollars. Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew opened it in December 1989.
The building takes its name from the Kallang area, which lies east of the city center. Many locals know the hall as a venue for Southeast Asian Games basketball and national swimming competitions.
The hall sits about ten minutes on foot from Stadium MRT station on the Circle Line. Those coming from other lines can use Kallang station on the East-West Line.
The facility can change its internal layout completely and accommodate up to fifteen thousand visitors. This flexibility allows conversion from concert seating to sports configuration within a few hours.
