Benjamin Sheares Bridge, Prestressed concrete bridge in Downtown Core, Singapore
Benjamin Sheares Bridge is a prestressed concrete structure crossing Marina Bay with eight traffic lanes and pedestrian paths. It connects the East Coast Parkway to Marina Centre and spans approximately 1.8 kilometers with a height of about 29 meters.
Construction began in 1978 and the bridge received its official opening on September 26, 1981. The project represented a major infrastructure investment for Singapore during a period of rapid urban expansion.
The structure represents Singapore's modern infrastructure development and appears on the country's banknotes and commemorative stamps as a symbol of national progress. It served as a visible marker of the city's rapid growth during the 1980s and remains recognized as part of the nation's engineering legacy.
The bridge functions as a major arterial route connecting suburban areas to downtown, with dedicated pedestrian and bicycle paths. It is easily accessible from the Marina district and remains central to traffic flow in this part of the city.
The Singapore Mint released special commemorative coins in silver and copper-nickel in 1982 to mark the completion of this transportation link. These coins have become collectible pieces that reflect the national importance of the structure at that time.
