Flower Dome, Glass greenhouse in Gardens by the Bay, Singapore
Flower Dome is a glass greenhouse in the Gardens by the Bay that recreates different climate zones under a massive glass dome. Nine theme gardens display plants from around the world, from olive trees to dry-climate succulents, spread across a large area.
The building opened its doors in 2012 as a new part of the modern garden complex. Some of the olive trees inside are a thousand years old and were brought here from various locations around the Mediterranean.
The space draws people who want to explore tropical gardens featuring plants from distant regions, and offers views where you see greenhouses filled with Mediterranean vegetation within a modern garden complex. The walkways pass by olive trees and succulents thriving in cool air, creating a contrast with the humid city outside.
Access is straightforward since you can arrive directly from Bayfront MRT station and walk underground to the building. Plan time to move slowly between the gardens, as there is much to see and the experience should not be rushed.
The temperature is deliberately kept cool so that Mediterranean plants can survive in Singapore's tropical climate. This is technically remarkable because it creates an artificial environment that completely contradicts the natural heat and humidity outside.
