The Helix Bridge, Pedestrian bridge in Downtown Core, Singapore
The Helix Bridge is a pedestrian bridge over the Singapore River in Downtown Core with a distinctive double-helix design made from stainless steel tubes. The structure spans 280 meters and connects Marina Centre with Marina South.
Construction of the bridge began in 2007 and it officially opened in 2010, using approximately 650 tonnes of stainless steel. The project was part of Singapore's urban renewal of the riverside area.
The bridge displays glowing letters at night representing DNA bases, illuminating the entire double-helix structure. This design reflects the importance of science and innovation in Singapore's identity.
Four viewing platforms are attached to the bridge structure and offer good observation points for the skyline and Marina Bay events. Smooth glass canopies protect pedestrians from sun and rain while crossing.
The bridge is not just a functional crossing but an art installation with fritted glass and perforated steel mesh that glows at night. The design lets visitors see DNA-like structures come alive while walking above the river.
