Esplanade Park, Heritage park in Downtown Core, Singapore
Esplanade Park is a green space of 2.4 hectares along Connaught Drive in Singapore's central business district. The park features historical landmarks, memorials, and ancient Angsana trees that are central to its character.
The park was established in 1943 and includes the Cenotaph memorial from 1922. These monuments mark important moments in Singapore's struggle during World War II and remain central to how the nation remembers its past.
Three national monuments within the park boundaries tell stories of Singapore's military history and the contributions of important local figures. These structures reflect the values and struggles that shaped the nation in ways visitors can see and understand while walking through the space.
The park is located near City Hall and Esplanade MRT stations and remains freely accessible throughout the day with no entrance fees. Visiting early in the morning or late afternoon is more comfortable than midday when the surrounding business district becomes busy.
Five notable Angsana trees in the park became a popular meeting spot for couples during the 1960s and earned a special name in the Hokkien language. These same trees still stand and offer a glimpse into how locals once used the space for romance and connection.
