National Gallery Singapore, National art museum in Downtown Core, Singapore
National Gallery Singapore is an art museum in Downtown Core that occupies two colonial-era buildings and showcases works from across Southeast Asia. The two structures are linked inside by bridges and a shared entrance hall, while exhibition rooms spread across multiple floors.
The idea for the museum was announced in 2005, when the government decided to create a central home for regional artworks. After years of renovation and adaptation, the spaces opened to the public in November 2015.
The name reflects a national commitment to gather regional art under one roof, and both heritage buildings stand joined by a modern canopy that now serves as a viewing terrace. Locals often visit to see contemporary works by artists from their own neighborhoods or to meet friends in the airy courtyards between exhibition halls.
Singaporean citizens and permanent residents enter free of charge, while international visitors pay at the ticketing counter or book admission online in advance. Opening hours run from 10:00 to 19:00, extending to 21:00 on Fridays, though public holidays may bring changes.
Several restaurants operate within the building, including a three-Michelin-starred establishment named Odette and a kitchen focused on traditional Peranakan cuisine. Visitors can therefore enjoy a meal without leaving the museum.
