The skyscraper opened in 1987 as an important addition to Marina Centre as Singapore's business district developed. Architect John C. Portman Jr. integrated contemporary design principles with practical building functions.

The atrium showcases Southeast Asian plant species that reflect the tropical character of the region. Visitors passing through the lobby encounter these green spaces integrated throughout the interior.
