Gedung Kuning

Gedung Kuning is a two-story Palladian structure at 73 Sultan Gate featuring classical symmetry, terracotta roof tiles, and ornamental plasterwork. The building combines formal European design principles with residential elements adapted to local needs.

The mansion was built in 1846 as a residence for Tengku Mahmud, a grandson of the Sultan of Johor. Merchant Haji Yusoff acquired it in 1912 and left his lasting mark on the property.

The bright yellow walls carry meaning from Malay royal heritage, while the interior combines British colonial details with local residential style. This blend shows how different cultures shaped the space over time.

The building now operates as a restaurant open to visitors. It sits in an easy-to-explore neighborhood where you can walk to other local sites and shops.

The property changed hands several times between 1919 and 1925, with stories of misfortune surrounding each transfer. Its original owner eventually repurchased it at a significantly lower price.
