Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, Buddhist temple in Rochor, Singapore.
Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple is a Buddhist temple in Rochor, Singapore, located on Waterloo Street and recognized by its red-and-gold facade with curved roof edges. The main altar stands beneath a wooden canopy with hand-carved beams, while stone lions flank the entrance and several inner courtyards open space for rituals.
A merchant donated the land in the late 19th century, and the community then built an initial prayer hall for Chinese immigrants. Major renovations in the 1980s added new wings and reinforced the foundations to handle growing visitor numbers.
The prayer hall takes its name from Hokkien dialect and centers worship on Cundi, a form of the Goddess of Mercy whose statue draws pilgrims from across the region. Devotees burn incense and seek guidance on personal matters, bringing fruits and flowers as offerings.
Access is through Waterloo Street near Bras Basah Road, with morning hours seeing fewer visitors than midday. Visitors should wear shoulder-covering clothing and remove shoes before entering the main prayer hall.
Devotees from both neighboring prayer houses sometimes visit each other's site, showing the everyday interfaith practice of the neighborhood. This tradition began informally in the early years and continues today between the two communities.
