Singapore Art Museum, National art museum in Bras Basah, Singapore
The Singapore Art Museum is an art museum in Bras Basah dedicated to contemporary works from Southeast Asia and beyond. The current exhibition space occupies a former industrial warehouse that accommodates large installations and rotating presentations by international artists.
The original building served as a Catholic school before being converted into a museum in the mid-nineties. The former chapel and several classrooms were adapted into exhibition areas while retaining parts of the school architecture.
The institution maintains one of the largest public collections of contemporary Southeast Asian artworks, representing multiple artistic perspectives and regional traditions.
The museum currently operates from a temporary site in Tanjong Pagar while its main building undergoes restoration work. Access to the exhibition floors involves stairs and ramps within the warehouse setting, with some areas adapted for wheelchair users.
The temporary exhibition space spans a former container storage area with high ceilings and exposed beams. This industrial setting allows artists to display works that would be difficult to accommodate in traditional gallery rooms.
