The Battle Box, Military museum in Fort Canning Park, Singapore
The Battle Box is a military museum in Fort Canning Park with 27 rooms inside a concrete bunker located about 9 meters underground. The structure has two entrances and was built to serve as a command center for defensive operations.
During World War II, the bunker served as a command center from which Lieutenant-General Percival ordered Singapore's surrender to Japanese forces in 1942. This location marks a critical turning point in Southeast Asian wartime history.
The museum displays how British soldiers lived and worked in this underground command center during World War II. The rooms show their daily routines and the difficult conditions they faced while performing their duties.
The museum is open daily to visitors, with guided tours through the underground site requiring proper footwear and caution. It is helpful to wear comfortable shoes and prepare yourself mentally for confined, dim spaces.
The bunker preserves an original cat ladder escape hatch that shows how soldiers used the emergency exit route. The reinforced concrete walls are specially designed to withstand direct bomb impacts.
