Rochor Centre, Housing complex in Central Region, Singapore.
Rochor Centre is a housing complex with four residential towers in yellow, green, blue, and red, rising above a three-story commercial podium. Each tower had a total of sixteen floors with apartments for several hundred families and retail spaces on the lower levels.
The complex was built in 1977, replacing a neighborhood of shophouses with modern residential units for several hundred families. In 1994, its original white exterior was transformed into four distinct colors, creating a new landmark in the cityscape.
The ground-floor shops specialized in ceremonial items for Buddhist and Taoist practices, serving visitors to the nearby Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple. These businesses shaped daily life at the complex and connected the residential community with local spiritual traditions.
The site is best explored during the day when ground-floor shops are open and the surrounding area is active. Access to the complex is straightforward, though it sits in a densely developed central area, so limited parking should be expected.
The project was notable as one of the first public housing complexes in Singapore to feature large-scale multicolored facade design. This 1994 color transformation showed innovative thinking in urban planning and became a recognizable visual marker for the entire region.
