Masjid Sultan, Religious landmark in Kampong Glam, Singapore.
Masjid Sultan is a mosque in the Kampong Glam district featuring two prominent golden domes and minarets that rise above the surrounding area. The base of these towers is decorated with recycled glass bottle ends, creating a distinctive architectural detail.
The first structure was built in 1824 by Sultan Hussein Shah using bricks as the primary material. The current building was constructed between 1929 and 1932, replacing the original structure entirely.
The mosque embodies a blend of Islamic, Indian, and European design elements that define the character of this place. Visitors experience this cultural fusion reflected in both the architecture and the role of the site as a gathering space for the community.
The complex is open to visitors from Saturday through Thursday, with guided tours available for those interested. Visitors should be aware of the religious function of the space and dress appropriately out of respect.
The glass bottle ends decorating the dome bases were donated by low-income Muslims from the area during construction. These modest contributions remain as an artwork that reveals the community behind them.
