Old Bridge, Iron arch bridge in Maribor, Slovenia
The Old Bridge is an iron arch structure crossing the Drava River in Maribor with three spans totaling 270 meters in length. The central span stretches 166 meters while the deck measures 4 meters wide, allowing both pedestrians and cyclists to cross.
The bridge was constructed between 1909 and 1913 as a replacement for an older wooden crossing. Its completion supported the growth of the vital transportation corridor connecting Vienna and Trieste through Maribor.
The bridge links the main square to Pobrežje Street and serves as a meeting point where locals regularly pass through and gather. Its protected monument status reflects how important this structure is to Maribor's identity.
The bridge is straightforward for pedestrians and cyclists to use, providing a safe way to cross the river without obstacles. There are no steep grades or challenging approaches that would hinder access.
Engineer Eduard Zotter selected this location because it was the only suitable riverbank for crossing between the towns of Dravograd and Ptuj. This geographic constraint made the spot a natural focal point for the region's growth.
