Mae Chan, Administrative district in Chiang Rai, Thailand
Mae Chan is an administrative district in northern Chiang Rai province covering approximately 791 square kilometers with eleven subdistricts spread across the landscape. The area contains 139 villages and is managed through multiple local administrative bodies.
The district took its present form during major administrative reforms in 1939 that redrew territorial boundaries and reorganized jurisdictions in the region. These changes established the foundation for the administrative structure that exists today.
The district draws merchants and residents from surrounding hill communities who come here to exchange handcrafted goods, fresh produce, and local wares in busy marketplaces. The crossroads role has shaped how people from different backgrounds interact and trade within this space.
The terrain is hilly and exploring different areas requires a vehicle or local transport options for practical movement. Familiarity with local routes helps navigate between subdistricts more easily.
The Choui Fong Tea Plantation spreads across rolling fields where visitors can watch workers harvest and process tea using traditional methods passed down locally. This established tea production has brought the region recognition as a significant growing area.
