Mueang Bueng Kan, Administrative district in Bueng Kan, Thailand
Mueang Bueng Kan is the main district of the eponymous province in northeastern Thailand, situated along the Mekong River. The area features western plains and eastern lowlands with abundant water sources and wetland areas.
Originally named Chai Buri, the district was part of Nakhon Phanom province before being transferred to Nong Khai in 1917. It became the capital of the newly established Bueng Kan province in 2011.
The district's name comes from Thai words meaning marsh and the color black, reflecting the wetland environment that shapes daily life here. Local communities have traditionally adapted to seasonal water cycles that define the region's character.
The area is well served by regular air-conditioned buses connecting to larger cities in the region. Visit during the dry season when roads are most accessible and water levels are manageable.
Construction of the Fifth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge started in 2020 to connect this region with Bolikhamsai province in Laos across the Mekong. This infrastructure project will significantly reshape border crossing patterns and daily movement for local residents.
