Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area

The park extends across 1920 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, featuring sandstone cliffs, river gorges, and three major rivers flowing into the Mekong River.

The area received protected status in October 1993 as the Phou Khao Khouay National Biodiversity Conservation Area before becoming a national park in 2021.

Different ethnic groups including Hmong, Khmu, and Yao communities maintain their traditional ways of life in villages surrounding the protected zone.

Visitors can reach the protected area by taking bus number 19 from Vientiane to Ban Somsamai, located 40 kilometers northeast of the capital city.

The green peafowl population near Ban Nakhay and Ban Nakhan Thoung represents a conservation success, as this species was previously considered extinct in Laos.
