Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area

Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area is a protected zone northeast of Vientiane with mountainous terrain, sandstone cliffs, and river gorges. Three major rivers flow through the region and join the Mekong.

The area gained protected status in 1993 as a biodiversity conservation zone and was formally designated a national park in 2021. This recognition marks its growth as a priority location for nature protection in the region.

The Hmong, Khmu, and Yao people inhabit villages surrounding the protected area and maintain their traditional practices. You can experience their craftsmanship and daily customs when visiting these communities.

The best way to reach the area is by taking bus 19 from Vientiane toward Ban Somsamai, located about 40 kilometers northeast of the capital. You should expect hilly terrain and bring proper footwear plus plenty of water.

Green peafowl near Ban Nakhay and Ban Nakhan Thoung were long extinct in Laos but have been successfully reestablished in this region. Their return demonstrates how protection efforts can save endangered species.
