Chiang Mai Zoo, Zoo in northern Chiang Mai, Thailand
Chiang Mai Zoo is a zoological garden on the slope of Doi Suthep in northern Thailand's city of Chiang Mai, displaying more than 400 animal species across roughly 200 acres in recreated habitats. The grounds spread over several levels with paths that wind through shaded sections and open viewpoints overlooking the city below.
The grounds opened in 1957 as a small animal shelter and grew over decades through donations and acquisitions. A major modernization took place in the early 2000s and transformed the facility significantly before it reopened in its current form in 2005.
The name comes from nearby Doi Suthep, the sacred mountain that rises above the city and gives the grounds their green backdrop. Visitors can walk between the enclosures and watch how families spend weekends here picnicking, while children follow the feeding times.
Entry is sold at several counters at the main entrance, with separate tickets available for special animal shows. The paths include some uphill sections, so comfortable shoes are helpful, and a small shuttle bus runs between the more distant areas.
The breeding program for Himalayan black bears ranks among the most successful efforts in Southeast Asia and has produced several cubs. The bears live in an enclosure that recreates their natural mountain environment, with rocks and caves that invite climbing.
