Khun Sathan National Park, National park in Nan Province, Thailand
Khun Sathan National Park is a protected area in Nan Province, northern Thailand, covering several districts including Namtok, Bua Yai, and Mueang Li. The terrain consists of mountain ridges, deep valleys, streams, and dense forest that shelter a wide range of plant and animal species.
The area was officially designated as a national park on March 27, 2017, bringing it into Thailand's network of protected land. Before that recognition, the region was already known as a source zone for several waterways that supply lower-lying areas.
Several villages near the park belong to hill tribe communities, including Hmong and Mien groups, who maintain their own languages and dress. Walking along the park's edges, visitors can see their fields and small settlements at the forest's edge.
The park has camping areas and marked trails, though some routes at higher elevations involve steep ground where sturdy footwear is a good idea. The rainy season turns many paths slippery, so visiting during the dry season makes movement around the park easier.
The park sits on a watershed between two major river systems, meaning rain falling on one side of the ridges drains toward the Nan River while rain on the other side flows toward the Ping River. This position makes the area a key starting point for waterways that supply a large part of northern Thailand.
