Büyükçekmece

Büyükçekmece is an administrative district on Istanbul's European side that stretches along the Marmara Sea coastline and includes a major freshwater lake within its boundaries. The area contains exhibition halls and park spaces with historical structures throughout.

The region was originally known as Athyras and experienced multiple shifts in power as various armies advanced toward the Bosphorus. A significant military event in the 5th century marked it as a strategically important location.

The Kulturpark shows how residents preserve and display local heritage through traditional structures like bridges and mosques that remain part of everyday life. These spaces serve as gathering places where people celebrate important events and connect with their past.

The area is well connected to central Istanbul by public transport and offers parking in various locations. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions, especially along the waterfront where wind can be strong.

A four-part bridge structure has connected the Marmara Sea to the freshwater lake since the Renaissance and remains a distinctive feature of the landscape. This complex construction receives less attention than other Istanbul landmarks despite its engineering achievement.
