Sancaklar mosque, Contemporary mosque in Büyükçekmece, Turkey
Sancaklar Mosque is a contemporary prayer hall set into a hillside with a rectangular minaret and a main space partially built below ground level. The structure uses slate and basalt materials and accommodates up to 650 worshippers in its central prayer area.
The building was completed in 2012 by architect Emre Arolat, marking a modern approach to religious architecture. This completion introduced new design standards to the Büyükçekmece area.
The name Sancaklar connects this place to the area's history. Visitors experience a sense of connection to the surroundings through natural light and the open design of the prayer space.
The site offers multiple spaces for different needs including a library, teahouse, and ablution areas where visitors can prepare before prayer. Community areas serve as gathering points for events and allow for a smooth visit.
The roof is covered with prairie vegetation that serves as natural insulation and blends the building with the hillside landscape. This green surface creates a balance between the modern structure and the natural surroundings.
