Anaea, Archaeological site in Kuşadası, Turkey
Anaea is an ancient city on the coast south of Kuşadası, with ruins showing walls, building foundations, and structural remains from different periods. The remains spread across the site and reveal the layout of what was once a thriving settlement.
The settlement began as a refuge for Samians fleeing their homeland and grew into an important military base. During conflicts between Athens and Sparta, it served as a naval station and launching point for attacks against enemies.
The pottery found here shows craft traditions and trade connections with communities around the Mediterranean. The patterns and shapes of vessels tell of people who passed down their skills and exchanged goods across long distances.
The site is located about 8 kilometers south of Kuşadası and is fairly easy to reach. It is best to visit in the early morning when it is cooler and you can explore the ruins at your own pace.
Ancient bricks and tiles at the site preserve paw prints of cats and dogs that walked across them while the clay was still soft. These accidental marks connect us directly to everyday life from thousands of years ago.
