Nanzhuang Township, A rural township in Miaoli County, Taiwan

Nanzhuang Township is a small mountain town in Miaoli County with narrow old streets, historic buildings, and local shops. The main features include Osmanthus Alley with its flower-themed food stalls, a century-old post office, Yongchang Temple, and traditional houses with tiled roofs spread along the interconnected pathways.

Nanzhuang emerged in the late 1800s and grew as a hub for mining and forestry workers during Japanese rule. The post office, temple, and stone staircase from that era reflect how the town served as a communication and gathering center for the surrounding mountain communities.

Nanzhuang carries strong Hakka roots, and you can see this heritage in the daily life of the old streets and local food shops. The community also shares space with indigenous Saisiyat people, whose traditions and festivals shape the cultural rhythm of the surrounding area.

Visit on quieter weekdays to walk the old streets without large crowds, or rent a bike from the visitor center to explore at your own pace. Most shops and landmarks are within walking distance, and nearby parking is available for those driving.

A maple tree over 150 years old with a twisted trunk stands in a schoolyard near the old post office, serving as a quiet symbol of the town's long history. Many visitors pass by without noticing this living monument, which locals value as a marker of the place's age and stability.
