Museum of Saisiat Folklore, A museum in Miaoli County
The Museum of Saisiat Folklore is a three-story building in Nanzhuang that presents the history and traditions of Taiwan's Saisiat indigenous people. Its facade is covered with bamboo strips and features stone pillars decorated with Saisiat symbols, while exhibition rooms display textiles, tools, and ritual objects.
The museum was established by Miaoli County's local government with support from Taiwan's central government to preserve the Saisiat's traditions and history. It documents how this indigenous people have maintained their culture over many centuries despite outside influences.
The museum displays the weaving traditions and craftwork of the Saisiat people through their everyday objects and ritual items on view. The interior spaces show how the community has preserved and continues to practice their artistic skills in textiles and tool-making.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and features a viewing platform on the third floor with panoramic views of Xiangtian Lake and surrounding mountains. Access is straightforward by public transportation from the nearby railway station, and a walking path lined with camellia oil trees circles the building.
The museum sits on the shore of Xiangtian Lake where the Saisiat hold their major ritual festivals such as Pasta'ay, where the community gathers to dance and offer traditional prayers. The lake and surrounding mountains often appear misty in winter and spring, creating a dreamlike landscape that visitors frequently photograph.
