Guanwu National Forest Recreation Area, National forest recreation area in Tai-an, Taiwan
Guanwu National Forest Recreation Area is a protected woodland zone in Tai-an spanning around 907 hectares. The terrain rises between 1500 and 2500 meters and contains thick forest with several waterfalls scattered throughout.
The area opened as a visitor destination in 2008 under a regulated access system. A mountain pass permit requirement was established to manage the number of people entering the protected zone.
The name comes from Mandarin words meaning fog watching, a fitting description for how mist regularly shrouds the forest canopy. Visitors quickly notice this characteristic when thick clouds settle among the trees during their walk.
The area features five marked hiking trails that pass through ancient cypress groves. Plan to start your walk before 5 PM since visibility decreases as daylight fades.
The Zhenshan Trail offers views of Dabajian Mountain and Snow Mountain along its path. In spring, between April and May, azaleas and rhododendrons bloom in waves across the forest floor.
