Daxueshan, Mountain summit in central Taichung City, Taiwan
Daxueshan is a summit rising 3,530 meters (11,581 feet) within a protected forest recreation area in Taichung. The slopes feature mixed forests of conifers and broadleaf trees that create distinct ecological zones at different elevations.
The area functioned as Daisetsu Mountain Forest Farm until 1988, when authorities designated it as a protected zone. This transition marked a shift from commercial forestry to conservation and environmental preservation.
The Atayal people, who originally inhabited this area, called this peak 'Babo Rinisan', meaning 'mountain where we cry farewell' in their language. This name reflects the deep connection between the indigenous community and the land.
The peak can be reached via National Freeway 1 to the Taichung interchange, then Provincial Highways 3 and 8 to the recreation area. Visitors should plan for changing weather conditions at high elevation and avoid visiting during heavy rain seasons.
The mountain supports 117 bird species and contains the largest concentration of mid-elevation bird habitats on the island. This makes it a significant location for biodiversity research and attracts birdwatchers from across the region.
