Trostianets dendropark, Protected arboretum in Chernihiv Oblast, Ukraine.
Trostianets dendropark is a protected arboretum in Chernihiv Oblast, Ukraine, bringing together tree and shrub collections from many different climates across a large open landscape. The grounds are divided into sections, each dedicated to a different group of plants, with paths running between them.
The park was founded in the early 1800s as a place to test and grow tree species from many parts of the world. Over time it grew into one of the main botanical research sites in what is now Ukraine.
The park takes its name from the nearby town of Trostianets, and today visitors walk among tree-lined alleys and open clearings. Some of the trees here come from distant regions and stand out for their unusual bark or leaf shapes.
The grounds are large and best explored on foot, so sturdy shoes are a good idea since some paths are unpaved. Visiting on a weekday, earlier in the day, tends to mean fewer people and more room to move around freely.
Some of the trees in the park were grown from seeds brought from North America and East Asia in the 1800s, making them well over 100 years old today. They stand as rare living records of early plant-collecting expeditions that can still be seen and touched.
