Sopilche, Urban park in Ternopil, Ukraine
Sopilche is an urban park in Ternopil featuring multiple ponds, wooden bridges, decorative windmills, and numerous paths through green spaces. The grounds span roughly 98 hectares and connect the Druzhba neighborhood with the city center.
The site began as marshland where peat was extracted during the 1960s before becoming an official park in 1985. It was initially called Pioneersky Park when it opened.
Wooden sculptures by local artist Ivan Merdak are scattered throughout the grounds, and a small zoo with llamas and deer offers encounters with animals as you walk the paths.
The park has food kiosks and a children's playground, making it easy to spend several hours exploring the grounds. Visit in fair weather when the paths are most enjoyable for walking.
The name comes from a medieval settlement that stood on this land before the city was founded, with historical records mentioning it in 1540. This connection to the past is marked by information signs throughout the park.
