Sopilche, Urban park in Ternopil, Ukraine
Sopilche is an urban park in Ternopil, Ukraine, laid out around several ponds connected by wooden bridges and dotted with decorative windmills. Paths wind through green areas and link the Druzhba neighborhood to the city center.
The land was marshland used for peat extraction during the 1960s before it was transformed into an official park in 1985. When it opened, it carried the name Pioneersky Park.
Wooden sculptures by local artist Ivan Merdak stand along the paths, giving the park a handcrafted character that sets it apart from typical city parks. A small zoo with llamas and deer offers a quiet encounter with animals as you walk through the grounds.
The park has food kiosks and a children's playground, so it is easy to spend several hours without leaving the grounds. Some paths can be muddy after rain, so it is worth choosing a dry day for the visit.
The name Sopilche comes from a medieval settlement recorded in documents as far back as 1540, long before the modern city was founded. Information signs placed around the park point out this link to the earlier settlement.
