Exaltation of the Cross Church, Stone Orthodox church in Ternopil, Ukraine.
The Exaltation of the Cross Church is a stone Orthodox church built on a hill at the edge of Ternopil Pond. A three-tier bell tower rises from its western side, giving the building a clear vertical profile visible from several parts of the city.
The church was built in the early 16th century under Jan Tarnowski, the Polish Crown Hetman who founded Ternopil. It replaced an older wooden structure from the Kyivan Rus period, making it one of the earliest stone religious buildings in the area.
The church remains an active place of worship for the local Orthodox community, and visitors can attend services that follow traditional rites. Its position above the pond makes it a natural landmark that people in the neighborhood orient themselves by.
The church stands on Nad Stavom Street on the eastern edge of the old town and is easy to spot from the pond below. The path up the hill is manageable on foot, and the top offers a good view over the water.
When the town was first built, the church was part of Ternopil's defensive system, not just a place of worship. Its hilltop position was chosen precisely because it allowed the building to serve as a lookout point along the town's fortifications.
