Ternopil, Regional center in Western Ukraine
Ternopil sits along the Seret River in western Ukraine and serves as the administrative and educational center of the region with several universities and technical colleges. The settlement extends across both banks of the river and is shaped by a large artificial lake that separates the center from the rest of the urban area.
A Polish nobleman founded the settlement in the 16th century as a fortified border post against raids from the east. The town changed hands several times over the following centuries between different empires and states.
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, constructed between 1749 and 1779, represents late European Baroque architecture with its detailed facade and interior design.
The city center is easy to explore on foot, while public buses and trolleybuses connect to the outer districts. The train station sits about two kilometers south of the center and offers connections to other cities across the country.
The large pond in the center was created in the 16th century by damming the river to protect the fortress that stood here. In winter, the water surface transforms into an extended ice sheet used by locals for skating.
