Camden Town, Market district in North London, England
Camden Town is a district in north London that stretches along both sides of Camden High Street and is known for its markets and music scene. The Regent's Canal runs through the area and is lined with former warehouses, shops and food establishments that have settled into the brick buildings.
Development began in the 1790s when Charles Pratt established a residential area north of what was then central London. During the 19th century the construction of the canal and the railway attracted industry and working families to the area.
The names of the markets derive from their industrial past or their position along the canal, and each area has developed its own character. On weekends the alleys fill with visitors browsing the stalls while street musicians provide entertainment.
Camden Town Underground station is on the Northern Line and connects the district with the center and other parts of the city. Weekends are busier than weekdays, and the markets keep longer hours during these times.
A large part of the buildings still date from the time when workshops and storage rooms for canal transport stood here. Some of the shops still use the original wooden beams and brick walls that bear witness to the industrial use.
