Aberavon, Parliamentary constituency in Neath Port Talbot, United Kingdom
Aberavon was a parliamentary constituency in Neath Port Talbot covering central and southwestern sections of Port Talbot with both housing and industrial zones. The district included communities such as Baglan and Baglan Bay, bounded by the M4 Motorway to the northeast and the River Afan to the southeast.
The constituency was created in 1918 from the division of Swansea District and remained continuously represented by Labour from 1922 onwards. It remained in place for more than a century before being dissolved in 2024.
The area held strong ties to the labour movement, attracting politicians committed to representing industrial workers and their families. Voting patterns consistently showed deep roots in left-wing politics and working-class values.
The area is easily accessible via the M4 Motorway and public transport connections around Port Talbot. Note that the historical boundaries of this constituency no longer hold official significance since its 2024 dissolution.
Ramsay MacDonald, Britain's first Labour Prime Minister, represented the seat from 1922 to 1929 and connected it deeply to the rising industrial unions. This association made it a centre of early British labour politics.
