Isle of Portland, Tied island in Dorset, England
The Isle of Portland is a limestone tied island in Dorset, England, stretching six kilometers in length and connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Its highest point sits at Verne Hill, rising 149 meters above sea level and offering views across the coast.
In 789, this area became the site of the first recorded Viking raid on the British mainland, marking the beginning of the Viking Age in England. Later, in 1520, Henry VIII ordered a castle built here to defend the coast against possible invasions from France.
The pale grey limestone from local quarries became the building material for major structures around the world, including St Paul's Cathedral and the United Nations Headquarters. Visitors can observe how the stone continues to be extracted in active quarries, following methods that date back centuries.
The A354 runs across Chesil Beach and links the area with the mainland, while Portland Harbour functions as a civilian port. Visitors should consider wind and weather, as the exposed terrain can be strongly affected, especially at the southern tip.
Walking through the 16th-century Portland Castle reveals the original defensive layout with its thick walls and gun ports facing directly onto the harbour. From the upper floor, the view stretches over the bay and the English Channel, where ships now pass peacefully while cannon fire once guarded these waters.
