Celtic Manor Resort, Five-star hotel and golf resort in Newport, Wales
Celtic Manor Resort is a golf resort and hotel on Christchurch Hill near Newport, spreading across meadows and woodland overlooking the Usk valley. The complex includes three golf courses, among them the Twenty Ten Course, which winds over gentle hills and open fields.
A residence from the 17th century was expanded into a manor house in the 19th century, then served as a hospital during and after the Second World War. After decades as a medical facility, the property was converted into a resort in the late 1980s and expanded further.
The name Celtic Manor recalls the region's ancient heritage, and the grounds sit on historic land overlooking the River Usk. Golfers from around the world come here to play on the same fairways used during the Ryder Cup.
Access is via Coldra Woods and the hills south of Newport, with reception in the main building below the tree line. Paths and roads connect the different areas, and visitors can walk or take a shuttle between restaurants, clubhouses, and leisure facilities.
The Twenty Ten Course was designed specifically for the 2010 Ryder Cup, making it the first course built exclusively for that tournament. The holes run through open ground and ponds that were added during planning to increase the challenge.
