Coleton Fishacre, Country house museum in Kingswear, England
Coleton Fishacre is a country house with gardens spread across 24 acres in a coastal setting. The building was constructed from local slate and the gardens descend to Pudcombe Cove.
The house was built between 1923 and 1926 for Rupert D'Oyly Carte by architect Oswald Milne. The construction followed Arts and Crafts principles that emphasized craftsmanship and local materials.
The interior displays 1920s furnishings and décor that reveal how a wealthy family lived at that time. The rooms still show how the family occupied completely separate spaces from the household staff.
The National Trust manages this property and offers guided tours, a cafe, and parking for visitors. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the gardens can be explored on foot along pathways with varying slopes.
The gardens contain plants from New Zealand and South Africa that grow here because of the Gulf Stream's warming effect on the local climate. These southern species would not normally survive in England's typical weather.
