Langport, town and civil parish in Somerset, United Kingdom
Langport is a small town on the banks of the River Parrett in the Somerset Levels wetland area in England. It has old buildings including the Hanging Chapel from the 15th century, the All Saints' Church with its tall tower, and an 18th century town hall topped with an octagonal clock tower added in the early 1800s.
The town served as an important trading center since medieval times, with goods moved by river and sold in local markets. In 1645, a significant battle took place here during the English Civil War where Parliamentarian forces won, and Oliver Cromwell witnessed the victory.
The name Langport comes from its position on the River Parrett, where trade and markets have taken place for centuries. The narrow streets and leaning houses in the old town show how people have lived and worked together in this place over time.
The town is easy to walk around, with smooth paths along the river where benches and picnic tables are available for rest. It works well as a base to visit nearby villages and explore the natural surroundings of the Somerset Levels.
The old houses along Bow Street lean toward each other, possibly because their foundations were built on a Roman road that once ran through the area. Walter Bagehot, a notable Victorian writer, was born in this town and is buried in the All Saints' Church graveyard.
