Camden Market, Marketplace in Camden Borough, England
Camden Market is a large marketplace in Camden Borough, North London, comprising several connected areas including Lock, Stables, and Hawley Wharf with over a thousand shops, stalls, bars, and cafés. The retail areas stretch along Regent's Canal and include converted warehouse buildings as well as open-air courtyards with cobblestone surfaces.
The site evolved from a small assembly of 16 stalls in the 1970s into one of the city's largest marketplaces. Former 19th-century gin warehouses were gradually incorporated into the current retail zones.
Visitors find street-food kitchens serving dishes from dozens of countries, from Argentine empanadas to Korean bibimbap, reflecting the area's multicultural energy. Fashion stalls showcase punk-inspired designs, band merchandise, and handmade accessories that echo Camden's long association with alternative music scenes.
The marketplace opens daily from 10 AM to 6 PM and can be reached on foot from several Underground stations in North London. Weekends and public holidays bring large crowds, so visiting in the morning or on weekdays offers more space to move around.
The Stables preserve horse stalls from the era when horses towed canal barges, and some original stall partitions remain visible. Waterside terraces provide seating directly beside the canal, where painted narrowboats occasionally drift past.
