Duntrune Castle, Medieval fortress in Kilmartin, Scotland
Duntrune Castle is a medieval fortress on the northern shore of Loch Crinan near Kilmartin in Scotland. The structure rises from rocky ground with thick stone walls that have endured for centuries.
The castle was built in the 12th century by Clan MacDougall as a defensive stronghold. The Malcolm family purchased it in 1792 and later added residential features to the structure.
The castle shows how Scottish defensive buildings changed over many centuries. You can see different construction periods layered into the walls.
The site sits within a region containing many archaeological remains scattered across the Kilmartin area. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the path to the waterside crosses uneven ground.
The walls contain stonework from the 13th century alongside residential rooms added in the 17th century. This layering reveals how the fortress was gradually converted into a dwelling place.
