Kilmartin Castle, Tower house in Kilmartin, Scotland.
Kilmartin Castle is a stone structure in the Scottish Highlands with a three-story main block and round towers at its northeast and southwest corners, completed by a small stair tower. The building retains its original form and shows how the Campbells shaped this residence for their family.
The castle was built around 1580 and stood under Campbell family control, serving as their residential seat. It later became home to John Carswell, a religious leader who eventually became Bishop of the Isles.
The building displays typical Scottish defensive features such as gun loops and iron grilles that reflect 16th-century fortification methods. These details tell the story of an era when such structures had to protect their inhabitants from attack.
Following extensive restoration completed in 2019, the structure now operates as a guesthouse offering modern amenities including contemporary bathrooms and copper bathtubs. Plan your visit in advance since the building is designed for overnight stays and may have limited access hours.
The castle sits near multiple archaeological sites in Kilmartin Glen, including standing stones, burial mounds, and ancient hill forts. This rich collection of old monuments offers visitors a window into the distant past of the region.
