Westminster tube station, Underground station in Westminster, United Kingdom
Westminster is an underground railway station in the City of Westminster with three separate lines whose platforms are arranged vertically at different depths beneath London's streets. The structure requires multiple escalators to connect the different levels.
The station opened on December 24, 1868, as Westminster Bridge station and served as the eastern terminus of the District Railway's first section. Two additional lines were added over time to handle increasing traffic in this central location.
The station serves as a main entry point for visitors heading to the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and other important government buildings in London. Daily crowds of travelers and commuters pass through to access these symbolic places.
The station provides access through Portcullis House and connects the Circle, District, and Jubilee lines with multiple escalators between the different levels. The varying depths of the lines mean you may need more time to walk between platforms, so allow extra time for connections.
Specialized engineering techniques were needed to protect Big Ben's foundations while excavating the deep Jubilee line platforms. This careful consideration made the project a technical challenge that required detailed planning and monitoring.
