Statue of Winston Churchill, Bronze statue in Parliament Square, London, United Kingdom.
The Statue of Winston Churchill is a 12-foot bronze sculpture on Parliament Square in Westminster, London. The figure wears a military greatcoat and stands with one hand resting on a walking stick facing the Palace of Westminster.
The sculpture was unveiled in November 1973 with Queen Elizabeth II and five Prime Ministers attending the ceremony. Clementine Spencer-Churchill presented the monument to the public during the formal dedication.
The sculpture shows Churchill in a standing pose with his walking stick, an image also seen in historical photographs. Visitors often use the square as a meeting point and photograph the figure against the backdrop of Parliament.
The monument stands on a public square between Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament and is accessible daily. The base is designed so that wheelchair users can approach the monument.
Sculptor Ivor Roberts-Jones changed the head during the work after being told that the first design resembled Benito Mussolini too much. The adjustment led to the present portrayal with a more determined facial expression.
