Statue of Mahatma Gandhi, Bronze statue in Parliament Square, London, United Kingdom
This bronze sculpture in Parliament Square depicts Mahatma Gandhi in traditional Indian attire with one hand raised. The roughly 9-foot figure stands among other significant historical figures in this public square.
The monument was unveiled in 2015 following a campaign by the Gandhi Memorial Trust with backing from British officials. Its installation marked official recognition of Gandhi's global influence on peace movements.
The statue commemorates Gandhi's teachings on nonviolent resistance that shaped justice movements across the world. Visitors see in this figure a symbol of peaceful protest whose message extends far beyond its historical era.
The square is accessible year-round with nearby bus stops and Westminster Underground station within walking distance. The area is easy to navigate on foot and surrounded by other central London sites.
The base was intentionally positioned lower than other monuments in the square, making a deliberate design choice. This placement reflects a conscious approach to how the space should be experienced.
