Childwickbury Manor, Manor house in St Michael, United Kingdom.
Childwickbury Manor is a manor house in St Michael, United Kingdom, with multiple reception rooms and bedrooms set within a large park of old trees. The estate includes walled gardens and open meadows covering several hectares.
The Lomax family owned the estate from 1666 to 1854, when it was sold to Henry Hayman Toulmin. Later, Sir John Blundell Maple acquired the manor and made it a center for horse breeding.
The stables and riding facilities recall the years when racehorses were bred here. Later, the property served as home and workplace for a film director who shot scenes on the grounds.
The estate lies between St Albans and Harpenden and is protected as a listed building. Visitors should note that it is a private residence and not open to the public.
Stanley Kubrick bought the property in 1978 and lived here until his death in 1999. He used the rooms and grounds as filming locations for some of his movies.
