Chiltern Open Air Museum, Open-air museum in Chalfont St Giles, England
Chiltern Open Air Museum is an open-air museum with about 37 historic buildings from various periods, ranging from the Iron Age to the 20th century, including barns, farmhouses, and traditional structures. The collection spans around 45 acres and also features a working historic farm with animals, traditional gardens, and woodland areas.
Volunteers founded the museum in 1976 to rescue historic buildings threatened with demolition, opening it to the public in 1981. This rescue mission emerged from the desire to preserve endangered structures that might otherwise have been lost.
The buildings show how ordinary people lived and worked across different time periods. Visitors see actual homes and workplaces that reflect their daily routines and crafts.
You get the best experience by taking a leisurely walk through the grounds to explore all the buildings and areas. Comfortable shoes are important since the terrain can be uneven and there are many paths to cover.
A standout item in the collection is the Henton Tin Chapel, originally from Oxfordshire, an unusual structure made of wood and covered in iron sheeting. This rare religious building gives visitors a glimpse into alternative building materials and construction methods from the 19th century.
