Kininvie distillery, whisky distillery in Moray, Scotland, UK
Kininvie is a whisky distillery in Moray with three wash stills and six spirit stills where single malt is produced in small quantities. Water for production comes from nearby hills, and the distillery shares some equipment located at the neighboring Balvenie site.
The distillery was founded in 1990 and built on the same site as the more established Balvenie and Glenfiddich distilleries. For many years it was primarily used for blended whisky production before launching its own single malt line under the Kininvie name starting in 2013.
The name Kininvie comes from a small stream nearby and means 'little head' in old Scots. The distillery takes pride in its Scottish roots and uses local water and regional barley in its whisky production.
The distillery is not regularly open to visitors and tours are available only occasionally. Those in the area can view the exterior buildings and copper stills from outside, but access to the interior is limited.
For many years, the distillery used an unusual arrangement where fermentation liquid was piped in from the neighboring Balvenie distillery, even though Kininvie had its own mashing equipment. This setup reflected the close operational connection between the sister distilleries of the William Grant group.
