Highland Park distillery, Whisky distillery in Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, Scotland.
Highland Park is a whisky distillery located on a hillside above the town of Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. The site features several buildings with traditional pagoda roofs, stone warehouses, and a working floor malting where barley is dried on stone floors.
Magnus Eunson began producing whisky here in the late 18th century without official permission. The distillery received its license in 1826 and has operated continuously at this location ever since.
The production methods incorporate traditional Orcadian techniques, utilizing local peat with high heather content for the malting process of the grains.
Tours through the facility show the production stages and conclude with tastings of different whiskies. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as some floors can be damp and the paths between buildings run outdoors.
The distillery sits at the northernmost point of all Scottish whisky production sites. Some casks mature in former underground passages that once served as hiding places for illicit spirits.
