The Macallan distillery, Whisky distillery in Craigellachie, Moray, Scotland.
The Macallan is a distillery in Craigellachie in the Scottish region of Moray producing single malt whisky. The facility features copper stills of different sizes standing in large halls, and several warehouses with wooden casks along the River Spey.
Alexander Reid founded the distillery in 1824 on a farm above the River Spey. Over the following decades ownership changed hands several times while production grew steadily and new buildings were added.
The name comes from two Gaelic words meaning together fertile plateau, describing the farmland where barley once grew before distilling began. Today the estate includes working fields and woodland that supply part of the oak needed for aging casks.
The visitor center welcomes guests throughout the year for tours that show the production steps. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes as tours move through several rooms and between buildings.
Archaeologists found traces of Middle Bronze Age settlements on the site, several thousand years older than the distillery itself. This discovery connects today's production with a long human history at the same location.
